National History Museum. Virtual Exhibitions and Educational Applications for the Modern Greek History

The project "National Historical Museum. Virtual Exhibitions and Educational Applications for the Modern Greek History" was implemented under the NSRF and the Operational Programme Digital Convergence. This is a key project for the upgrading of the National Historical Museum which owns one of the oldest and richest collections and archival documents of the recent history in Europe.

Scientific documentation and digitization of 4.550 items of the collection and the archives of the Museum were implemented. The digital material was uploaded to the world-renowned software for Museums and Collections MuseumPlus, which is connected to the subsystem eMuseumPlus (web interface) in order to make the collection accessible to the public. All the above formed the basis for the creative use of the digital cultural resources of the Museum and its promotion at international level, as well as for increasing visits in situ.

In this context, a modern and user-friendly website was designed. The user is able to virtually browse the collections through thematic routes and tour the historical residence of Lazarus Kountourioti in Hydra through an interactive application.

Innovative educational web applications regarding the Modern Greek history and tour applications in the virtual museum for smartphones and mobile devices were also designed. The project includes also an elevation of the experience for the in situ visitor, for whom interactive exhibits were designed in order to enhance its engagement with the collection and make his visit scientifically comprehensive and more interesting.

The project included, finally, the innovative action "Uploading services of digital material in Wikipedia» in which the curators of the museum and the scientific community, became familiar with the principles and rules of the modern Encyclopedia, and were trained in writing articles. Part of digital cultural material that was produced under the project, was uploaded on Wikipedia and created a total of 200 entries.
