Wikikythnos: a Wikipedia Island

The Municipality of Kythnos allies with PostScriptum and a network of experts to enable the local and online community of budding Wikipedians joining forces to create open digital content about the island.

Specifically, the project re-imagines the island as a "smart" and "open" Kythnos" and aims to promote it across borders and to create and gather material accessible to the global community.

Through a series of thematic actions and workshops of a collaborative nature, around the features of the largest digital encyclopedia, Wikipedia, PostScriptum and the Municipality of Kythnos support the incline of current times towards  open knowledge, development of digital skills & smart destinations.

WikiKythnos includes field visits to the island of Kythnos with experts talking about the history, cultural tradition, folklore, natural beauty and traditional gastronomy of Kythnos with the belief that knowledge is a social good. At the same time, through strategic synergies, it attempts to raise the environmental awareness of the island's inhabitants, with emphasis on the flora and fauna of Kythnos and especially the protected areas that are part of the Natura 2000 network.

The action invites interested residents & friends of Kythnos to contribute with their knowledge, by writing new or enriching existing content about landmarks, monuments, historical events and persons, folklore and environmental data about Kythnos in the largest free online Encyclopedia.

The results of the action are assembled and presented in an exhibition format during this summer in the island inviting locals, visitors and mindful individual to explore the project and the island through a different lens.
